National Video Game Day Report Reveals Top 25 Most-Viral Games

Medal’s analysis of 8+ million gamers reveals social connection and shareable moments are eclipsing pure gameplay with Roblox topping charts and REPO, Marvel Rivals’ rise signaling new trends

September 12, 2025 at 04:00 AM EST - Roblox, GTA V, and REPO are among the most viral games of 2025, so far, per a new report from Medal, the world’s fastest-growing platform for gamers to clip and share gameplay. In honor of National Video Games Day, the platform today released their State of Gaming Report revealing how Gen Z and Gen Alpha gamers play, create, and engage with their favorite titles.

The report analyzed over 58 million user sessions since January 2025 across Medal’s 25 most-played games, representing over 33 million hours of content captured and over 11.5 million clips shared. The new data reveals the top 25 games by three key metrics: total play sessions, total clips created (“clippability”), and total clips shared (“shareability”).

Medal’s State of Gaming Report also reveals the following:

  • Gaming as a Social Space: Games with robust social experiences are dominating the landscape – both by sessions played and content created. Roblox’s continued popularity embodies this trend, as do games like Minecraft and GTA V, where upwards of 80% of all clips captured come from multiplayer experiences.
  • The Rise of “Friendslop”: Games built around fun, shareable moments rather than intense, skill-based gameplay – known as “friendslop” – are becoming must-play titles. While not always topping the "most played" lists, titles like REPO, Peak, and Lethal Company instead lead in virality. Their shareable content makes them disproportionately visible on social feeds commanding over 7% of all clips amongst top 25 titles.
  • Content Breaks Through the Clutter: Not every game that’s clippable is viral. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 ranked no. 12 in clips recorded, but dropped down to no. 17 in virality, indicating that players were less inclined to share moments in-game with others. Inversely, Red Dead Redemption 2 lagged in clippability (no. 23) but highly-sharable roleplaying moments delivered strong virality (no. 19).
